"Aberdeen" stars Stellan Skarsgård (most recently seen in "The Glass House") and Lena Headey.  This a most powerful family drama about family redemption and reconciliation.

The story centers on a young coke addicted woman (Headey) who gets a call from her estranged mother who is dying of cancer and who is in the hospital.  The mother wants her daughter to come visit before she dies... and to bring her father as well. The twist here is that the father is a downtrodden alcoholic who has lost his job.  He also hasn't seen his daughter for many years.  Once the daughter finds her father, the film becomes a road picture with the daughter/father traveling to see the mother before she dies.  However, on every turn of this voyage, something always seem to happen to stop them from completing their journey.

This movie obviously has downbeat themes... kind of like "Leaving Las Vegas".  And most of the characters have major flaws.  But you still pull strongly for them, hoping that they can over-come all the adversity that they encounter.  It's so refreshing to see a moving and intelligent film with great acting performances.  Headey and Skarsgård are remarkable in their emotional range, their ability to dig deep into the characters and find the souls each of them has buried beneath mounds of resentment or bottles of alcohol.  I hope the Academy remembers both of them for possible Best actress and actor nominations. Their performances are that strong....

Anybody who likes character based films will like "Aberdeen".   It's one of those films that is downbeat and often depressing, but also one of emotional uplifting  and redemption.  Few people will leave the theatre after watching this one and not feel something.
