I didn't expect much from "Boat Trip" and I didn't get much either, but for an extremely trashy, low-brow comedy, I had a pretty good time.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays a guy who proposes to his longtime girlfriend (Vivica A. Fox), and ends up both throwing up on her (since he proposes on a hot-air balloon and he has motion sickness) and finding out she's leaving him for some shallow jerk.  Six months later, he's still broken up over losing her, so his best buddy (Horatio Sanz) tries to cheer him up by proposing they go on a singles cruise, which is supposedly swarming with beautiful single women.  They book a trip with a travel agent ("Howard Stern's" Artie Lange), who turns out to be the guy who Sanz cursed out after he stole his parking space.  To get them back, the agent signs them up for a gay cruise.  And you can pretty much take it from there.

This movie reminded me of a cheap, low-budget late night sex comedy, like "The Bikini Carwash Company" (yes, as if I'm the only guy who saw that movie).  If they still had the show, this kind of movie would be playing on USA's "Up All Night."  It's filled with nothing but cheap sex gags and whenever it has the chance, it bombards you with gratuitous shots of women in bikinis.  I know what you're thinking.  This is a movie about a gay cruise.  Where do the women in bikinis fit in?  Well, there's a little subplot involving a Swedish bikini team being rescued and boarding onto the ship, and Sanz posing as gay to his advantage, so the girls will feel secure as he rubs them down with lotion.  Now you get it?

Of course, I still don't understand how Cuba Gooding, Jr. got involved.  Though he keeps a smile throughout most of the film, he must've lost a bet if he went from doing "Men of Honor" and other dramatic films to doing an amateurish sex comedy.  Even "Snow Dogs" looks professional compared to "BT."  I've seen tons and tons of low-budget films, but this is the first one I've seen where the boom microphone appears in the shot 90 percent of the time!  You don't have to be a film scholar to spot the flaws here!

Horatio Sanz is always amusing to watch, as I feel he's one of the few new SNL cast members who can actually make me crack up.  He may not be very well-suited to carry on a lead role, but his comic energy makes up for it.  Even former 007 star Roger Moore makes a few amusing appearances as a gay yuppie.  And "Rush Hour 2" hottie Roselyn Sanchez graces the screen with her beautiful face and smokin' body.

On an artistic level, I can attack this movie from all directions!  The plot is predictable, every single joke is predictable.  Yet it works as a guilty pleasure, and I did receive some big laughs.  I would better suggest you wait 'til the film's on DVD to check it out, as it may not be worth the price of a ticket, but it'll be worth a look on a lonely night.

This ship sank before it even sat sail.  I have been dreading this film since I first saw the trailer almost one year ago.  I mean--Cuba Gooding, Jr. may have won an Oscar and all, but does anyone remember a little bomb called "Snow Dogs"?  Yikes.  And, as funny as Horatio Sanz is on Saturday Night Live, he should stick to television and give up his film career; there is little there.  There was a much better comedy about an unexpected boat trip called "The Imposters", starring Stanley Tucci and Oliver Platt.  That was a quality comedy.  This is pure crap.  Not only is it crap, it is offensive to the homosexual community.  Why use the same stereotypes?  Not all homosexuals are cross dressers with helium voices and exaggerated gestures.  Why can't homosexuals be shown like they were in "Sling Blade"?  John Ritter did a marvelous job of conveying your average, everyday homosexual.  I just felt the film was offensive and completely unfunny.  This was crap.  Catch a different boat.
