I
have to say that when I first saw the preview for this one, I
was less than convinced that Renee Zellweger would be able to
pull of the British thing. But she does. What I
actually ended up being annoyed with in this movie wasn't the
movie itself but my inconsiderate movie neighbors! Making
noise, getting confused by (sparse) British slang and
"whispering" about it. Ugh.
Good movie. I didn't really see the point of having
Bridget's friends around. They didn't do much. Her
parents are great characters, though. This is more than
just a chick flick. There's some intelligent banter and a
lot of laugh-out-loud moments. Sure, the plot is basically
predictable, but it's still an enjoyable ride. See it --
definitely if you're a girl, probably if you're not.
One more thing -- What's the deal with movie previews so totally
inaccurately reflecting actual movies lately? It might be
nitpicky, but I sure to get annoyed with discrepancies.
How bout the preview scene where Bridget answers the phone,
"Bridget Jones, wanton sex goddess?" and then says
"Oh, hi, dad." In the movie, it's switched to
"mum." There must be a reason. Maybe
it's an international thing. Probably thought of by the
same people that decided that British Frosted Flakes should just
be called Frosties. Hmmm.

Like any other Hugh Grant film, I had to be dragged to it kicking and
screaming. But it turned
out that this was not his film – it was Renee Zellweger's.
Ms. Zellweger portrayed a funny, very real Bridget Jones.
I laughed, I cried, I stuffed my face with popcorn without
remorse. Go see it.
