SNL
Studios have had the tendency to turn good skits into terrible
movies. That trend is broken here--well, sort of.
"Corky Romano" is a terrible film, but it never was a
skit--this is an original from some gentleman locked up in the SNL
attic somewhere (hopefully not Al Franken).
"Corky
Romano" is a mess from start to finish, not as bad as
"Night at the Roxbury", but not nearly as good as
"Ladies Man" (and "Ladies Man" was terrible
also, go figure). Chris Katan is the title character, who
infiltrates the FBI to see what they have on his mobster father,
played by Peter Falk. Peter Berg and Chris Penn co-star as
Corky's brothers, Berg being jealous and illiterate and Penn being
perpetually angry. Richard Roundtree (that's right--Shaft
himself) is Corky's FBI partner.
Okay,
so the cast is probably the reason for the flop of the film.
Chris Penn only belongs in low-budget action flicks and the
occasional Tarantino flick--he has no reason trying to be funny in a
film with a script about as humor-inducing as a shot in the foot.
Richard Roundtree looks out of place in a big budget Hollywood film,
as he did in the remake of "Shaft"--the blaxploitation
days are over and he should have been buried along with the
celluloid. And, every time we seen Peter Falk, we can't help
but picture the lovable old grandpa from "The Princess
Bride"--instead, we get Columbo meets Tony Soprano.
Alas,
the cast is not the only problem in this flop. The jokes are
not that funny. The only humorous moment in the film is when
Corky is dressed up like a girl scout--but, those laughs are based
solely on the job by the costume designer and make-up artists--not
the actors and certainly not the director. If it tells you
anything, I didn't even bother to find out who directed this piece
of garbage, because I just assumed it was Alan Smithee.
My
conclusion is simple: SNL--what the hell? The films they
produce are rarely successful, panned by every critic in the
universe, and usually always connected to at least 10 "Year's
Worst" lists. Why continue? Maybe after "Corky
Romano", the antichrist of American cinema, just maybe they
will close the doors on humorless skits with zero potential.
If not, I'm sure we can expect a "Spartan Cheerleaders"
film before too long.
