Since this film is so
obviously about kids, I think I have invented a game for
kids to play. It's called "Count the
Bombs". Here we go, boys and girls, now you
try..."Showtime"..."The Adventures of Pluto
Nash"..."I Spy"...well, kids, it is time to
add one more to the list. Why? Because
"Daddy Day Care" is a steaming piece of crapola,
that's why.
Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, and Steve Zahn are three 'down
and out' dads, strapped for cash, who decided the best
idea would be to open up a day care center for the
youngsters. Why would the kids like it?
Because they get to do whatever the hell they want to do,
no strings attached. I was surprised they were not
letting them play road hockey or something to that effect.
Of course, there must be a villain, which I suppose is
Anjelica Huston as Miss Harridan, but her day care looks
pretty good from where I was sitting. The kids were
reading foreign languages and seemed to be getting their
money's worth, education wise. Besides, kids should
not get to have that much fun growing up. That is
what college is for.
Whoa to Eddie for this film. He keeps on shoveling
more crap on his career, one flop at a time. At
least this one will be successful at the box office.
I am willing to bet it makes more money in it's first
weekend than his previous three films did altogether.
That still doesn't mean everything is kosher, because this
film teaches terrible values to children and might even
encourage some jackasses to open day care centers.
We want Louise Fletcher from "One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest" watching our kids -- we do NOT want
the bumpkins from "Deliverance".
So, will kids enjoy this flick? Of course they will.
For an hour and a half, they will get to imagine
themselves in a world where normal, everyday concerns do
not matter - where they can do whatever they want,
whenever they want. That is until they get back home
and Dad throws a boot at their head because their quoting
lines from the flick and drowning out the wresting match
on the tube.
After last week, when I find the comic gem called "A
Mighty Wind", I was hopeful that comedies would be
elevating their standards a little this year. After
seeing this and "The In-Laws", I have this deep,
sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. These last
two films I have seen are not as good as "A Mighty
Wind", but they sure as hell gave me one.
