Here's the basic plot summary for "The Forsaken" -- Sean
(Kerr Smith) is driving through the desert to deliver a car, picks up a hitch-hiker/vampire hunter, meets some vampires,
and ends up in danger of becoming a vampire himself. The movie is a vehicle for three things:
1) Boobs
2) Explosions
3) WB stars trying to find a wider fan
base
I suppose the film succeeds in all three areas.
The boobs show up in the very first scene (well, one boob....the other one is covered in
blood). There are explosions throughout the movie, even the vampires explode.
The most exciting effects come when the first vampire is burst by the sun,
this happened way too early in the flick though. And there is certainly enough cursing (and
aforementioned nudity) to make this movie a strict "no-no" for younger Dawson's Creek and Roswell fans.
I have to say I loved watching Kerr Smith star in a movie (he used to be a waiter in a restaurant where I worked).
That was by far the best part of "The Forsaken" for me.
The lead vampire in this movie is an oldie, but he is not
presented with the classy air that you might see in "Dracula"
or "Interview with the Vampire" -- he and his drones are
blood-hungry, not merely thirsty, and the tie-in with sex and
feeding is completely overt here in a way that is bordering more
on pornographic than sensual.
There are some really kitchy moments which would have worked if I could've decided if the film-makers intended them to be
kitchy. The whole film is kind of like one long trailer -- it makes you want to see more, but leaves you feeling as if you've only been given three minutes of content.
The only difference is that it takes two hours of sitting in a theater to get that content.
