I have read
numerous critical reviews of this film and can see validity
in each one I have read. I have listened to the
negative viewpoints, like how the film has no plot and is an
exercise in boredom and stupidity, and that is a very valid
point. I have listened to the positive viewpoints,
like how this film is an original concept and has intriguing
dialogue and is an exercise in fine character acting and
staging. Ditch the latter and stick with the
negatives. This film blows. Oh yes, this film
blows.
Matt Damon and Casey Affleck star as two men named Gerry.
Well, Gerry and Gerry get lost in the desert. That is
the end of the plot summation. The rest of the film is
walking and talking and walking and talking and more walking
and more talking. Ugh. This is the most boring
film I have ever had the misfortune of sitting through and I
don't see how Gus Van Sant could have even considered this
being a remotely decent or watchable piece of cinema.
And, Matt Damon? What in the hell was he thinking?
Now, don't get me wrong, I like the arthouse picture just as
much as the next guy. The more unique and original the
better; but, it's no use being unique when your version of
unique--how do I put this gently--SUCKS!!! Half of the
theatre walked out midway through the film, and the rest
either fell asleep, walked outside to make a cellphone call,
or shot themselves in the head. I watched--I was glued
to the screen--I was in complete awe at the sheer awfulness
of this moronic exercise in redundancy.
So, here is a very quick summation of the entire film:
PLOT = CRAP, ACTING = CRAP, DIRECTING = CRAP, and SCRIPT =
CRAP. One more time for those of you who just joined
the review: "Gerry" is the worst film of the
past ten years, hands down. Matt Damon looks cute as
ever, but that just isn't enough anymore. This is very
GERRY-atric.
