"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is the second film in the Harry Potter series and chronicles Harry's second year at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  In case you're from Mars and have never heard of Harry Potter here's a brief background: Harry was orphaned as a baby when the evil Lord Voldmort murdered his wizard  parents.  Harry was left to live with his awful Muggle (non-magic) family who hate him....but luckily Harry, like his parents,  is also a wizard and he spends all but the summers at his new home, Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry-- a place where he is accepted for who he is...and not forced to sleep in a cupboard!

The second installment of Harry Potter is even better than it's predecessor.  The action is more fast paced and the story is more complex.  This year at Hogwart's the mysterious Chamber of Secrets has been opened and horrible things begin to happen at the school.  Everyone is frightened because it is said that the "Heir of Slitheren" has opened the chamber and unleashed a terrible monster-- one who will rid the school of all non pure-blooded students (which means, any student who has a Muggle in his or her family lineage).  Harry and his friends make it their mission to find out who the culprit is.

Being a fan of the Harry Potter books I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.  I was a little hard on the original film-- I didn't quite like all of the special effects and I was annoyed by some of the things that were left out of changed from the novel, but this time I forgot all about my expectations and just went into the film ready to have fun.  I really enjoyed all of the magical scenes and spells that were cast-- since the previous film spent so much needed time introducing the audience to the world of Harry Potter, a lot of the cool spells were left out.

One thing I really want to warn you about is this: although Harry Potter is aimed at children, this particular movie isn't appropriate for small kids.  A lot of scary things happen-- death is even an issue-- and I'm not sure small children should be exposed to a film that contains that much darkness.  There are lots of scary monsters too.  It's just not a good idea to bring the little ones so don't-- go see a Veggie Tale instead.

Recommendation: If you are a fan of Harry Potter then you shouldn't miss "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".  Be sure to catch it in the theaters while you can-- DVD just isn't as good.  If you've never seen the original movie rent it and then go see this one-- it's really a great film and series!

Rarely does a sequel out perform the original.  "The Godfather II", "Aliens", and "Terminator 2" are some of the exceptions.  Add "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" to that distinguished list.  This is a glorious film.  The second in the series offers more laughs, more eye candy, and more adventure than the first, the comedy thanks in large part to the hilarious Kenneth Branagh as the new professor at Hogwarts.  I thought this was a spectacular film from start to finish and this may turn out to be one of the best Hollywood franchises ever, even with the passing of the great Richard Harris, who shows in this film why he will be so sorely missed.  The young actors step it up a notch, with fine supporting performances from Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and Jason Isaacs as the new villain in the series.  I just flat out adored this film, especially the fact that this film, like the book, is darker and scarier than the first.  I heard a couple of kids crying in the theatre.  That's what they have babysitters for.  Once again--what a flawless picture.
