Don't
ask me why I ever went to see "How High" in the theaters
because all I can say in my defense is that I was really bored and
had already seen everything else that was showing. Call it a
freak of nature. Just as I expected, "How High" was
not Oscar bound and was certainly not going to be on any Top 10
lists. In fact, I'm sure it will be on several 10 Worst
lists--but not mine. Though this was not a great film, nor a
good film, it still had a few laughs and just enough laughs to make
it enjoyable entertainment for some and loathsome crap for others.
Method
Man and Redman star as two stoners who suddenly realize the weed
they have started smoking is making their IQ's skyrocket. In
fact, they are actually able to get into Harvard University.
But, when the weed wears off, they are forced to try and make it in
one of the toughest universities in the country. One of the
most comical scenes comes when they are trying to get smarter--they
go about it by smoking the bones of a 'dead smart guy' who just so
happens to be John Quincy Adams. Lark Voorhies (yes, Lisa from
"Saved By the Bell") costars as the love interest, and
funnyman Fred Willard costars as the Dean of Harvard University.
"How
High" was directed by first time filmmaker Jesse Dylan, who
just so happens to be the son of Bob Dylan and the brothers of
Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan. His vision and talent in
this film are not evident because a film like this isn't really hard
to direct--"How High" is like a hybrid between "Back
to School", "Legally
Blonde", and "Friday".
However, despite the redundancy of the plot and endless script clichés, I found myself laughing throughout this disaster.
This is not quality cinema, but it is entertaining nonetheless, and
everybody needs a good nonsensical laugh now and again. I
prefer to think of this film as a "beautiful disaster".
