"Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is a wonderful, action packed story about a quest through the magical land of Middle-Earth.  It all started when a ring was created.  It wasn't just any ring though, it was a ring of power and it's devious owner, Dark Lord Sauron, used it to wage war on Middle-Earth in the hopes of conquering it's people.  The evil one, however, was defeated when the ring was severed from his hand by a human warrior.

To destroy all the evil of the ring it needed to be cast into the molten fires where it was created, on Mount Doom, but  the human was weak-- he was intoxicated by the power of the ring and he did not destroy it. Because of it's intense power and evil effect on people, many tried to steal the ring from the human owner and eventually he was murdered-- but the ring slipped away and was lost....until many years later when a hobbit found it.

Once the ring was recovered, the evil spirit of it's original owner was awakened and the Dark Lord once again began to rebuild his army-- first to search out and take back his ring and secondly to try one again to conquer Middle-Earth.  In order to stop the evil Lord, a fellowship of nine is formed and their quest is to take the ring back to Mount Doom-- the center of in the Dark Lord's dominion.  The fellowship consists of an elf, a dwarf, 2 man, a wizard, and 4 hobbits-- one of which is Frodo, the ring bearer.

Frodo is the only one who can posses the ring yet be unaffected by it's intense power.  He has a heavy burden to carry because not only is he in great peril from being hunted down by the Dark Lord and his followers but even his own friends cannot always resist the temptation and power of the ring.  He never knows who to trust and he must learn to trust himself if he wants to complete his quest successfully.

I've never read any of the "Lord of the Rings" novels and I've never seen the original animated movie.  I did, however, enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons when I was a kid (actually, since I was so little I usually just watched my older cousins and brother play-- I never actually got to play)-- so I guess I'm no stranger to characters like halflings (hobbits), dwarves, elves, and stories about mystical quests.  I'm not really one of those people who is "into" D&D and things like that but I absolutely loved this movie.  I thought the story was really exciting and the action sequences were amazing and sometimes frightening.  I've been trying to get everyone I know to see this movie because I know that most people will love it as much as I did.

I will admit though, that it was a little long and my seat wasn't too comfortable (I sat near the front since it was so packed), but that has nothing to do with the quality of the movie though-- I just want to warn you to get a comfy chair to sit in when you see this.  Also, one more warning-- since I never read the books or knew anything about the Lord of the Rings I was a little ticked off at the end.  The thing is, the story didn't really end....there was no conclusion....it just ended in a sort of "to be continued..." sort of way.  People explained to me that it was supposed to end that way and the story wouldn't be complete until I saw the final installment of the trilogy...but I didn't care.  I loved the story and I wanted to see the end...I don't want to wait 2 more years!  I want to see it now!!!  I guess that just proves how much I really liked the movie, right?

Other Junkie's opinions.....

       Billy Ray ( 4 out of 4 pops )

With a running time of three hours, director Peter Jackson fit enough fantasy, adventure, and intrigue to make J.K. Rowling take stock.  "Lord of the Rings:  Fellowship of the Rings", the first in the three part series, is an epic fantasy the likes of which may have never been produced.  Combining elements of "The Hobbit", "Legend", "Labrynth", and "Willow", this film is truly one of the great fantasy films ever crafted.  Elijah Wood is convincing as Frodo Baggins, and Ian McKellen gives a standout performance as Gandolf the Wizard.  Also, Christopher Lee is equally vicious as a rival wizard.  This is a fantastic film with extraordinary special effects, magnificently coordinated fight sequences, and dazzling make-up design.  Entertaining from start to finish, it's a shame we have to wait another year for the sequel.  I could have sat through the entire three part series in the same night.

      James ( 2 1/2 out of 4 pops )

Having never read the book and not loving fantasy, I didn't really have any desire to see this.  As a result, I was bored.  Mostly in the beginning when they were setting up characters who I could care less about though, but I was bored.  During those boring moments, it seems all I could think about was when the movie would end.  I must looked at my watch at least once during the movie--something I have NEVER done before.  But somewhere a little past the halfway part the action picked up and I wasn't thinking about the time.  It was probably the point where the lovely Liv Tyler appears, and unlike my boredom, her appearance was brief.  She was one of the aspects of this movie that I was ACTUALLY looking forward to.  Hopefully she appears more in the other 2.  It was around this time in the movie that I bumped the rating from 1 pop to 3.5 but then it got a little slow again...then it got fast and funny.  John Rhys-Davies (who plays the dwarf, Gimli) is one heck of an actor and knows how to do comedy with his line "nobody throws a dwarf!".  I was cracking up to that one.   If you're "into" fantasy, then get your tail to the theater pronto!  BUT if you're like me and could care less, then don't bother...it'll be on TV in a few years.
