Boy, was this flick a stinker.
I thought from the cleverly orchestrated trailers that this
romantic comedy might be pretty enjoyable. WRONG!
This might be the worst romantic comedy I have ever had the
misfortune of seeing. It takes two moderately attractive
stars--Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson--throws them
together in a somewhat original plot, and then mutates it so
badly into a slapstick comedy/unbelievable farce that the
romance is pissed on and the comedy is just too outrageous to
induce anything but curiosity.
Matthew McConaughey is Benjamin Barry, who works at an ad
agency. He makes a deal with a co-worker that he can
make any girl fall in love with him in 10 days. Kate
Hudson is Andie Anderson. She pitches an idea for an
article to her editor (Bebe Neuwirth). The idea--that
she can seduce a guy and then drive him away in 10 days, doing
everything a girl could possibly do wrong in a relationship
(nickname his genitalia, have her dog piss on his pool table,
leave her feminine products strewn everywhere, etc.).
And, this being the typical romantic comedy, it is already deducible
that they are going to fall madly in love. Duh.
What makes this such a miserable picture is that not even the
two main stars seem to know what in the hell they are doing.
Matthew McConaughey drops it down to Jeff Daniels "Dumb
and Dumber" level, and Kate Hudson seems to have turned
slightly schizophrenic since "The Four Feathers".
Not to mention, I have always thought Kate Hudson was a
terrible actress. I had hope for Matthew McConaughey
since his brilliant turn in the moderately successful picture
"13 Conversations About One Thing". but this film
just goes to show that money will always hold value over
taste.
There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this waste of
screen time, and I suggest that this film might have taken an irreparable
toll on the romantic comedy genre as a whole. This is
NUMBER ONE at the box office and it is completely useless.
I would rather "Shanghai Knights" take the top spot
than this crap. DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM--I am begging
you. Go see something else. Go see "Final
Destination 2" or even go and rent "Dahmer"--they
are both unbelievably terrible pictures, but they are ten
times more watchable than this junk.
