It seems that nobody understands the spoof genre anymore. Of course, after "Scary Movie 2" I wouldn't blame them, but the first "Scary Movie" was good and "Teen Movie" is much better. That's right, unknown director Joel Gallen gives the Wayans a run for their money. This movie isn't really making fun of the movies like it's Wayan brother sister-flick, it's got a lot of respect for the movies it's joshin'. It's clever and doesn't resort to gross-out gags as much as "Scary Movie" did, which is probably the reason why Ron Lester spoofs his own character from "Varsity Blues". That's right, Billy Bob's back and this time he's Reggie Ray. Why don't people understand this genre?

Who in their right mind would walk into a movie like this and expect to see oscar-caliber performances? So, why then do critics review these movies like such? I really wanna know...could it be that the film opens with a female masturbation scene? Nah...really, what is it? The main movies "Teen Movie" spoofs are "10 Things I Hate About You" and "She's All That", but there's "Sixteen Candles", "Risky Business", "Porky's", "Carrie", and the two "American" movies "American Beauty" and "American Pie". Wait a minute, since when is "American Beauty" a teen movie? Whatever. Anyway, if you ever seen those movies, then you'll love this movie. If you can't stand Freddie Prinze Jr, then you'll love this movie. Oh, I think I just answered my question. It's because reviewers see these spoofs without seeing the movies they're based on.  Now, does that make sense? I didn't think so.

One of the reason why most critics think poorly of this film is that they only see it as a gross-out movie, but if you pay attention then you'll see all the little details. I won't mention any though, but look for the school name, mascot, and other little things. The sight gags. There were more sight gags in this movie than both "Scary" movies, combined.

If you've read my previous reviews, then you know that I like movies without big stars, and this is another reason why I liked this movie. Okay, so I know Ron Lester from "Varsity Blues", but everyone else I didn't. Some of the notables include Cerina Vincent, who plays the full-time practicing nudist, Areola. Yes, she really walks around naked for the entire movie. I bet that made the costume designer's job a little easier. There's Janey's (Chyler Leigh) younger brother Mitch (Cody McMaims) who leads the trio of virgin freshman who parody the guys of "American Pie" in their quest to lose it. There's cameo's by Lacey Chabert and Randy Quaid, the latter also parodies "American Pie", but the best cameo of them all is at the end: Molly Ringwald. The movie ends with her line, "Stupid f***in' teenagers!". What a great cast and great casting, Joseph Middleton.

Do I recommend this movie? Of course I do! But again, you gotta do your homework and see the movies it parodies. Or you won't get the jokes. Rent the teen movies at your local video store and then try to identify all the spoofs. There's around 20. That's right. I didn't list them all. That takes all the fun out of it. Because if you know the movies this movie spoofs, the gags will be all more funny and you will be rolling over in the aisle laughing your butt off when the person next to you will simply be chuckling...and that's a priceless moment.

Other Junkie's opinions.....

      Patsy ( 3 out of 4 pops )

Being the type of person who thought that "Scary Movie" was a complete piece of crap I was not looking forward to seeing this movie at all.  I was pleasantly surprised, however.  Instead of a pointless plot that randomly mocks other movies, "Teen Movie" actually had a decent story-- stolen from "She's All That" but who cares?  I loved the fact that this movie didn't just stick to spoofing recent teen movies but included classic 80's teen movies as well-- some of my old favorites!  Besides the gratuitous nudity-- thanks to the always buck naked foreign exchange student, whose joke was dead in the water-- and beside the toilet scene the movie was fairly clean and inoffensive.  Overall, this movie was entertaining and funny-- everything you could hope for when you're in the mood to watch a silly movie.

      Matt ( 1 1/2 out of 4 pops )

This is not only an awful comedy, but an awful comedy that wastes a brilliant premise.  Poking fun at all these schmaltzy, clichéd, formulaic, predictable teen flicks we had to sit through?  Genius!  But when you have a cast of unknown actors, who have no sense of comic timing and delivery, not to mention material that's forced and heavy-handed, you can't win.  The only one who cracked me up--and the only PROFESSIONAL in the cast--was Randy Quaid as the deadbeat, drunken Dad.  The satire is totally broad.  Anyone who has seen "Airplane" or any of the "Naked Gun" flicks knows that satire is meant to be sharp and subtle, and not played in a way in which the movie is making fun of itself.  This clunker was destined to go direct to video.

      Billy Ray ( 1 out of 4 pops )

The other night I popped in "Airplane!" on VHS just to rehash some old movie watching memories.  After watching it, I knew what a good spoof was--"Surely, you can't be serious?"  "I am.  And stop calling me Shirley."  It's classic.  Then, after watching "Not Another Teen Movie", I knew what a bad spoof was.  The entire philosophy behind a spoof is making fun of good--key word "good"--movies, not bad ones.  Films like "She's All That", "American Pie", and "10 Things I Hate About You" don't deserve to get spoofed--they suck (big fancy word, eh?).  That's like a movie spoofing "Ishtar" and "Hudson Hawk".  It's pointless.  And, does anyone find it a little pathetic that Ron Lester, the fat guy who played Billy Bob in "Varsity Blues" has to sink down to the Dustin Diamond "Screech" level and play the same role over and over again?  Molly Ringwald and Randy Quaid are pretty darn funny in their cameos, but the remainder of the cast is so unknown and talentless that most of the spoofs are lost, or just not that funny to begin with.  There are a few funny moments, but the film is ultimately unsalvageable from the pits of mediocrity and bad spoofs.  "Airplane!" was a good spoof.  "The Naked Gun" was a good spoof.  "Scary Movie" was a decent spoof.  "Not Another Teen Movie" is an embarrassment.
